Getting the plug-in: Follow links and instructions or get help. There are a few specialized maps: Orthophoto, Lite, SDCP, Annexations, Arizona, Aspen Fire etc). Class primarily covers the Main Map only. Accessing commands Map window overview. Three ways: Tool bar, right-click in the map to get menu, or mouse wheel. Most tools stick. Tool tips on tool bar. Clearing tool with ESC key back to default select tool. Moving around the map (I.E. Navigating) Zoom by factor of 2 Zooming to a rectangular area (usually easiest) Zoom to map width Demonstrate Measure Distance to prove result. Single segment, multiple segments Measuring and map accuracy. Zoom to map scale Zoom previous Zoom out Unzoom to show the entire map Zoom selected Panning Panning/Zooming with mouse wheel Preferences for... Info line at bottom of map: Units (feet or lat/lon) Display Map Position Display Map Scale – Used for printing to scale and knowing when layers come on. Display Map Width Using bookmarks to save current pan and zoom. Adding a bookmark. Going to a bookmark. Deleting a bookmark. The map legend and map layer order. See Tips and Help for layer grouping. Examples of layers: Roads, washes, parcels. All layers are on top of each other as per legend. (For example: School districts, Jurisdictions) Layers are sorted alphabetically within the following groups: Point features Linear features Completely transparent polygonal features you can see through (Such as Parcels, Section Grid, etc.) Translucent or hatched polygonal features you can partially see through Solid color filled polygonal features you can't see through Orthophotos Turn layers on and off to show only what you need and keep things fast. Some layers are visible only at certain scales. (For example: parcels, major streets, street network.) Only currently available layers show in the legend based on scale. Groups Layers can be hard to find in the legend. There are lots of them. Typing in the layer name to find layers. Tip: Zoom way in, find and turn on the layer you want, then zoom to the area of interest. Examples of map layers. Show and explain Orthophotos. What's an Orthophoto? What are the different orthophotos? 1998, 2000, 2002, DOQ's etc. Arizona Map: Topo maps, DOQQ's Utility layers: Have sewers. Why we don't have electric, water, gas, etc. Layer update frequency. Identifying map features – 4 ways 1. Map tips (yellow popup) 2. Some layers show with names by default (Supervisor districts, Jurisdictions) 3. Some have layers "without names" and "with names" (Street Net, Topography) 4. Some labels are separate layers: Parcel addresses, parcel IDs, Subdivision names Unfortunately, you can't turn labels on and off for a given layer. Preferences menu. Getting Help Click "MapGuide Tips and Help" at the top. Right-click in map and select help. See MapGuide tips link in initial page. View help online or download PDF document and print it out. See links. Viewing TIFF documents and software for viewing TIFF documents. Some layers are linked to other data – a powerful feature. Double-clicking. When you see the pointing hand. Linked info is in a second window May be hidden behind another window. Best to dismiss the window each time. Demonstrate double-click links. Links to scanned documents in TIFF format. Viewing scanned documents. Selecting map objects such as parcels or streets for reports and making buffers. Clicking selects an object. Changes color! Selected objects are used to get reports and to do buffering. Shift-click adds to the selected set. Clicking again deselects an object. Right-click menu to clear all selections. Advanced object selection Select by rectangle, radius, or polygon. Selection mode: Centroid or intersection. Setting the selection mode. Viewing reports Double-clicking gives info on one feature. Reports are on all SELECTED features. Four kinds of information: - Parcel owner mailing addresses - Parcel tax information - Parcel situs (property) addresses - Parcel area - Streets Comma delimited reports for importing into other databases and programs. Ways to make mailing labels: See tutorials for making data for Word, Access database, or Word Perfect. Parcel Information Search: Tabular lookup. Zoom to parcel. Zoom to lat/long. (1 of 2 ways) Printing a map. Use right mouse click, not browser print. Page setup options: title, scale, legend Making the map bigger or to fill the page. - Be sure page setup options are off. - Set landscape mode. Print to any Windows printer: From desktop printer to large HP plotter Printing to scale Printing to Scale section in MapGuide Tips and Help. Zoom to desired map scale and set "Page Setup, Map size, Specify scale" to match. Scale is a simple ratio. No units. For 1" to 200' multiply feet by 12 so ratio is in inches. 1 to 2400 Copying a map to the clipboard and pasting into another document or e-mail. Demo with Word and/or MS Paint. Also works with AutoCAD. Copy as URL. Zoom Goto demo: What is it? Zoom map to an object, such as a parcel or specific map feature by name. "Adr Num" address zoom button Demonstrate several zoom goto's. Partial entry usually gives a list to choose from. Zoom to latitude/longitude with drop-down tool. Creating buffers Choose the desired selection mode: Centroid or intersection. Walk through buffer process. Manually removing streets and unwanted parcels. Making a report. Can buffer one or any number of features. See buffer tutorial. Drawing tools, Calculate Area tool, and Get Lat/Lon tool. For Internet Explorer on Windows only Drawing points, lines, polygons, and text. Sizes are in map units on the ground, not size on the screen or printed paper. Good for printing, copying the map to another document, or making things to buffer. Create circles by drawing a point and buffering the point. Drawings last as long as your session. You can't save them. Buffering a drawn line, drawn polygon, and existing map polygons. Using the Calculate Area tool. Works for any map polygon, including those you draw. Using the Get Lat/Lon tool.
