CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS REPORT

This project progress report is for construction activities for capital improvement projects such as major roadway widening projects. The Field Engineering Division oversees transportation construction projects and reports the following activities for JUNE 2013:

MAGEE ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: MONA LISA TO LA CANADA DRIVE:

Scope: This is Phase 1 of the Cortaro Farms Road/Magee Road: Thornydale Road to Oracle Road Improvement Project. The improvements for Phase 1 include the widening of the roadway to four lanes with a center median. Bike lanes and sidewalks will be added between Shannon and La Cañada. The off-set intersection of Magee Road and La Cholla Boulevard will be reconfigured to make it a safer intersection. The drainage along the Carmack Wash will also be improved. Native plant landscaping and public art will be included in the project.

LA CANADA ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: RIVER ROAD TO INA ROAD:

Scope: The work consists of constructing a four lane arterial roadway with a raised median along the La Canada Drive alignment from the north side of River Road to the south side of Ina Road. The total length of La Canada Drive to be built under this project is approximately 2.7 miles, and includes reconstruction of the intersection with Orange Grove Road. The work includes earthwork; replacement, extension and/or installation of concrete box culverts, pipe culverts, and associated inlets, outlets and channel work (excavation, armoring); constructing a closed roadway pavement drainage system; furnishing and placing aggregate base and asphaltic concrete; constructing concrete curb, sidewalk, and public-use trail; noise and retaining walls; pavement markings; traffic signals; installing landscaping and irrigation; installation of artwork; and related incidental work. Davis-Bacon Prevailing Wages requirements apply.

Project Status:

• The contractor has completed construction of both Phase I and Phase II of the Joint Utility Trench (JUT). They continue to make progress on drainage work which has started ahead of the contract milestone dates for this work.
• The contractor is working on final grade in preparation of placing curb and sidewalk.
• Utility stakeholders have completed Phase I tie-overs according to the project milestone schedule and are on track to complete Phase II tie-overs per the original project schedule.

CORTARO FARMS/MAGEE ROAD: THORNYDALE ROAD TO MONA LISA:

Scope: The project consists of a total of 1.95 miles of road improvements including 1.65 miles of Cortaro Farms Road/Magee Road, from Thornydale Road to Mona Lisa Road, and 0.30 miles of Shannon Road. The construction consists of four lanes of roadway with medians, curbs, sidewalks, traffic signals, landscaping and irrigation, utility work, retaining walls, soil nail walls, noise walls and drainage facilities, an new AASHTO Type IV concrete girder bridge over the Canada del Oro Wash and improvements to the existing Canada del Oro Wash bridge.

LA CHOLLA BOULEVARD: MAGEE ROAD TO OVERTON ROAD:

Scope: The Project consists of constructing a four lane arterial roadway with a raised median along the La Cholla Boulevard alignment from just North of Magee Road to just North of Overton Road and two new six-span structures over this project is 1.7 miles. One major intersection to be reconstructed is Overton Road. The work includes earthwork: constructing storm drain systems; constructing concrete box culverts; building two similar six-span bridges; furnishing and placing aggregate base and asphaltic concrete; constructing concrete curb, concrete sidewalk, and concrete sidewalk, and concrete channel lining; furnishing and installing guard rail, pavement markings, traffic signals, irrigation, and plants; and related incidental work.

Activities for June:

• 95% of the clearing and grubbing is completed.
• North and south bound bridge abutments and back walls at CDO Wash are completed.
• Utility opening for SWG, T.E.P., ITS completed on abutments #1 and #2 for both North and South bound bridge.
• Pier caps for both North and South bound bridges at the CDO Wash are completed.
• Contractor started setting girders for both North and South bound bridges.
• Soil Cement placement for both, North and South side of CDO Wash is completed.
• Drainage Work, placing RCP’s, junction’s structures and manholes continuing.
• Work is continuing on catch basins thru out project.
• Removal of existing asphalt pavement for new South bound lanes.
• Roadway excavation to embankment for South bound lanes.
• Borrow haul and placement for South bound lanes in progress.
• Contractor is working on final preparation for A.B.C. placement south bound roadway.
• Concrete box extension, outlet at Hardy Wash under construction.
• Garfield Wash outlet is under construction.
• Concrete curb placement in progress.
• Concrete driveways and ADA ramps under construction.
• Century Link is continuing to relocate their utilities to West side of La Cholla Blvd.

VALENCIA ROAD STREET LIGHTING AND SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS: CARDINAL AVENUE TO WESTOVER AVENUE:

Scope: The project consists of .27 miles of road improvements on Valencia Rd. between Cardinal Ave. and Westover/Hildreth Ave. The construction consist of new east and west bound travel lane, curb and gutter, sidewalks and drainage facilities. Work also includes new concrete bus bays, modifications to the existing traffic signal at the Valencia/Cardinal intersection and the installation of new street lights.

CAMINO DE OESTE LOS REALES ROAD TO VALENCIA ROAD:

Scope: The project consists of widening the existing roadway from a two lane section to a three lane section from Los Reales Road to Valencia Road in order to improve drainage and enhance safety along Camino De Oeste. The proposed improvements include widening approximately 4,800 LF of the existing road to a three leg segment with paved shoulders: sidewalk, vertical curb, and sidewalk lighting on the west side, and minor drainage improvements.

Contractor: Southern Arizona Paving, Inc. and Construction Co.
Bid amount: $1,743,578.67
Notice to proceed: May 29, 2012
Estimated completion: Fall 2013
