Uninstalling the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer

There's generally no need or reason to uninstall the MapGuide Viewer once you have it installed. However, if you are having installation problems, it may be a good idea to try to uninstall a previous version of the MapGuide Viewer.

There are three versions of the MapGuide Viewer:

Uninstalling the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control (Internet Explorer)

The following removal procedure for ActiveX controls and plugins is adapted from Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article 154850. Windows 7, Windows Vista or Internet Explorer 8 users should see the next heading Uninstalling the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control in Windows 7, Windows Vista or Internet Explorer 8.

There are three methods that should be tried in sequence until it's proven that the Viewer has been removed.

  1. Using Add/Remove Programs

  2. Removing from the Downloaded Program Files folder

  3. Deleting the mgaxctrl.dll file

Test to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is fully uninstalled by trying to access a MapGuide map (taking care not to install again!). Or check the MapGuide Viewer section on the Display MapGuide Environment page. If MapGuide is still working, try re-booting and test again to be sure the MapGuide Viewer is really removed from your system.

Uninstalling the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control in Windows 7, Windows Vista or Internet Explorer 8

The following Windows Vista instructions are adapted from the Windows Vista Help and How-to under the "Can I delete Add-ons or ActiveX controls?" FAQ.

To delete an ActiveX control that you have installed, use the Add-on Manager. If the add-on cannot be removed in Add-on Manager, you might be able to uninstall it through Control Panel.

To delete the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control you have installed in Internet Explorer 8:

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons.

(This may avoid problems enabling an ActiveX control you install after you delete an older one.)
  6. With the MapGuide ActiveX Control still selected, click 'More information', in the bottom-left area of the Manage Add-Ons window.
  7. In the More Information dialog box, click Remove. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  8. When you are finished, click Close.

To delete the MapGuide Viewer ActiveX control you have installed in Internet Explorer 7:

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools button, click Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.
  3. In the Show list, click Downloaded ActiveX controls to display all ActiveX controls.
  4. Click on the ActiveX control you want to delete (Autodesk MapGuide ActiveX Control).
  5. Verify that Enable is set in the Settings area of the dialog box. If Disable is set, then click Enable. (This may avoid problems enabling an ActiveX control you install after you delete an older one.)
  6. Click the ActiveX control you want to delete (Autodesk MapGuide ActiveX Control), and then click Delete.
  7. When you are finished, click OK.

Uninstalling the MapGuide Viewer Plugin (Netscape 4.x)

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  2. If the Autodesk MapGuide(R) Viewer Plug-In you want to remove appears in the list of installed programs, click on it, click Add/Remove, and then follow the instructions on the screen. If the Autodesk MapGuide(R) Viewer Plug-In does not appear in the list of installed programs, it is not installed.
