At the
1996 ESRI User Conference,
John Calkins of ESRI,
,
gave a presentation titled The Internet and GIS Data.
His talk greatly clarified the state-of-the-art for GIS and the Internet
by describing four publishing categories that he defined.
This section explains and illustrates the four techniques plus a real-time map and image category we added. Each has links to real-world examples you can see for yourself. These pages are largely taken from his presentation with some additions.
The line between map generators and real-time map browsers is starting to blur. Decide for yourself. Criteria may include the size of the database and access speed.
Brandon Plewe has written a book titled GIS Online: Information Retrieval, Mapping, and the Internet. His web site, GIS Online, defines "Distributed Geographic Information" and includes many links to online GIS sites.
As we find ways to bring our GIS to the web, we're documenting things we've learned and how to do it.
